Trial version of WinRAR leaves computers open to hacking

People using trial versions 5.70 or earlier of WinRAR should update to prevent malicious code from running on their machines.

According to reports, there’s a weakness in the popular WinRAR archive app that affects trial version 5.70, allowing threat actors to tamper with WinRAR’s requests to users. Attackers who use the vulnerability may launch applications remotely, retrieve network-related information, and run arbitrary code.

Computers with the vulnerable WinRAR version are not the only ones at risk; other devices in the network, such as home or office gadgets, may also be exposed.

If you are running a trial version of WinRAR, ensure it is up to date to protect yourself:

  • Click Help → About to check the version number, and if the version is 5.70 or earlier, update it.
